A Legacy Built on Petroleum
The history of the petrochemical industry is closely connected to the development of petroleum refining and modern chemical engineering. What began with the processing of crude oil gradually developed into a sophisticated global industry producing fuels, polymers, chemicals and construction materials. Petroleum itself has been used by civilizations for thousands of years. Natural bitumen was historically used for waterproofing, construction, adhesives and other purposes. Ancient records describe the use of petroleum and bituminous materials in regions around Mesopotamia and the Middle East. The modern petrochemical industry emerged much later, as advances in refining and chemical processing made it possible to transform petroleum and natural-gas feedstocks into valuable chemical building blocks.
The Birth of Modern Plastics
One of the most important developments was the discovery and commercial development of polyethylene. Polyethylene was first observed experimentally in the late 19th century, but its commercial development accelerated in the 1930s. In 1933, researchers Eric Fawcett and Reginald Gibson at Imperial Chemical Industries discovered a practical high-pressure process for polymerizing ethylene. This eventually led to the first commercial LDPE production in 1939. During the following decades, advances in catalysts and polymerization technology produced new polyethylene grades with different combinations of strength, flexibility, density and processing characteristics.
The Evolution of Polyethylene
LDPE — Low-Density Polyethylene
HDPE — High-Density Polyethylene
LLDPE — Linear Low-Density Polyethylene
The Rise of Polypropylene
Polypropylene (PP) became another major milestone in polymer development.
The Development of PVC
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) has one of the longest histories among modern synthetic polymers.
The Long History of Bitumen
While modern bitumen production is associated with petroleum refining, the material itself has a much older history. Natural bitumen was used thousands of years ago for waterproofing, construction, adhesives and protective coatings. Historical evidence records its use in ancient civilizations across the Middle East and South Asia. Modern petroleum refining transformed bitumen from a naturally occurring material into a highly controlled industrial product. Today, refinery processes produce bitumen with properties suited to different infrastructure and construction requirements.
